After years of using different PC's/laptops, only retiring them to recyclers or selling them for parts after they no longer work, this seems so senseless to make a working device unusable. Granted thieves taking devices is not good, but it is just as bad when the company blocks access to an idevice you legitimately own, which is still working properly, even without their intervention. It is as bad as having the device stolen. This is an example of crazy security policies. Very much a reality of our time. Other peaceful people who do their best to follow rules having to suffer and have a hard time and needing to jump through more hoops because of incidents of criminality/terrorism/disturbance. Anyone can make mistakes, but when we are following rules, or aiming for beneficial things, are we still supposed to be punished or blocked? Of course this needs more depth and is connected to human nature, beliefs, psychology, religion and is out of the scope of this post. (Putting this out there, you can look it up: Jesus is the way, the truth and the life....)
It would be much better for the environment if we were able to reuse the iDevices, much like we can keep our old PCs running with linux, better for everyone. People still like new improved stuff so Apple wont miss out. Resources used to make old stuff would be maximized. For many of us who don't care too much about being fashionable, these are some of the things that matter. We need to reuse first before we recycle.
If there are a lot of reused ipads from people who no longer want them, and they become very commonplace, they would no longer be such a thief magnet, due to them becoming everyday items. Besides they would already be running Linux and not iOS. So products from Apple would still have that appealing novelty and elitism of iOS.
There's jailbreaking and bypassing activation lock methods, most of which do not work. Let's just skip all of that and flash linux into the devices. More iDevice owners can ask for this considering the premium that is paid for the devices.
Yes we can say, just buy android, which is a good tip. But that still leaves the huge number of non-reusable iDevices out there. Instead we can ask, why do we need to replace android when it works so well? Why not just make totally non-working devices headed for the parts pile or scrap heap work again?
TLDR: it would be a good day when we can flash mobile linux into old activation locked idevices that we legitimately own.
We just need the wifi, touchscreen and web browsing to be functional. Of course if stuff like ebook readers, video players and music players work too, that would be great.
This seems like the best place to post, as it encompasses the groups that can act on this UbPorts, Ubuntu Touch, Sailfish, PureOS among others. Just missing Just as they do for the desktop in coordination with other orgs, Ubuntu had a good vision for linux on mobile, now they have passed the baton to others to continue the endeavor.
There is an ipad mini 2 available here ready for testing that the ipad can recover from.
